FRANÇAIS 102 is a 4-credit course. Section 1 meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30-10:20am. The fourth credit is for regular required work outside the classroom with both audio and video materials. This is an integral part of the course: regular attendance in class and timely completion of lab work is both expected and required for successful completion of the course. The lab will keep records of each visit. Be sure to sign attendance sheets in class. Repeated unexcused absences (beyond two) or tardiness will have an increasingly negative effect on your grade. If you opt to take the class P/F: the attendance policy applies to you too!

PARTICIPATION EN CLASSE  Learning a foreign language is an active and interactive process. It does not happen simply by studying a book. You learn by doing. It is thus imperative that you participate actively in class, using French to communicate. Trust me: you will learn to speak and understand French. If this approach presents any special problems for you, let me know.

INTERNET  There are millions of web sites in French. The language lab has computers set up with bookmarks that will get you started. You can also use my web page as a starting point, especially the French links/Liens francophones, or our course page. There are even sites to help you with grammar, vocabulary, etc. Sign up at French.about.com. Have fun as you learn to navigate in French.  Get an email account at UMass if you don’t have one. My address is brian.thompson@umb.edu

CAHIER D'ACTIVITÉS  The workbook is a tool to help you integrate new structures and vocabulary. Keep up with the weekly schedule, correct your work using a different color pen or pencil with the help of the answer key and hand it in promptly. I will underline problems, which you can then correct. Self-correction is an extremely effective learning process. When there are problems you do not know how to correct, ask me before, during or after class, or consult a classmate: cooperative learning is also effective. It is helpful if you complete exercises before the corresponding quizzes or exams.

TÉLÉPHONE/COURRIEL  I will produce a class list with phone numbers and email addresses, to facilitate cooperative learning and preparation for dialogues or skits in class or as quiz or exam components. If you do not want your phone number shared with classmates, let me know. It will then be your responsibility to initiate phone contacts. [Abuse of the telephone list should not be tolerated. Report it to me, for referral to campus authorities.]

PREREQUISITES   FR 101 or equivalent preparation in French. Please note urgently the policy of Modern Language Department: no student who is too advanced in French in terms of French courses taken either in America or Francophone countries like Haiti, Senegal, Morocco, etc. is allowed to take this course.  Student’s records at registrar’s office will be checked.

COURSE OBJECTIVES   This course aims to provide you with the tools to communicate in French, both written and oral, as well as basic knowledge of French and francophone culture. It is a building block for what I hope will be a lifelong participation in a world-wide community of French speakers.

CONTRÔLES DES CONNAISSANCES  There will be chapter quizzes, a mid-term and a final exam. Each will have both a written and an oral/interactive component. They will reflect what we do in class as well as your lab work. They will attempt to assess your ability to actually use French to communicate. Your final grade will be based not only on your quizzes and exams but also on attendance, ACTIVE participation, and regular and timely completion of workbook or other assigned exercises.
